Late winter is a good time for pruning in the Willamette Valley. Pruning bushes and trees can be a little daunting. Not to worry! Here are some tips for pruning:
- Prune on a mild, dry day
- First, prune out dead and diseased branches
- Then remove the overgrown and smaller branches to increase light and air at the crown of the tree
- In general, your goal is to keep the branches that develop of maintain the structure of the tree
- Cut branches at the node, the point at which one branch or twig attaches to another
Before pruning flowering bushes, determine if the plant flowers on new or old growth. That will help you decide when to prune if you want to maintain the flowers for the upcoming season.
